Be a good neighbor

NewYorkNews.app Community is where New Yorkers ask questions, share tips and talk about the news on their block. These guidelines keep it useful and welcoming for everyone.

Three things we ask

  1. 1Keep it kind

Disagree with ideas, not people. Talk to neighbors the way you would on your stoop — no insults, name-calling, threats or pile-ons.

  2. 2Keep it local

Post about life in New York: your block, your commute, local news, events and questions. Pick the neighborhood and line that fit so the right people see it.

  3. 3Verify first

Before you share something urgent — a closure, a crime, a health scare — check it. Link a source or say what you saw yourself. When in doubt, ask as a question.

What gets removed

  • Harassment and personal attacksTargeting a person, sharing someone’s private information, or encouraging others to pile on.
  • Hate speechAttacks on people based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability or immigration status.
  • Spam and self-promotionRepeated ads, referral links, and posts that exist only to sell. Local businesses are welcome to answer questions honestly.
  • MisinformationFalse claims that could cause harm, like fake emergencies or made-up transit or public-health alerts.
  • Off-topic or not localContent that has nothing to do with New York or the conversation it’s posted in.
  • Illegal or dangerous contentThreats of violence, sharing illegal goods or services, or anything that puts neighbors at risk.

Repeated or serious violations can lead to a warning, a temporary suspension, or a permanent ban. You’ll get an email explaining any action on your account.

How reports and auto-hiding work

  1. Anyone signed in can reportTap ••• on a post or reply and choose Report. Reports are anonymous — the author never sees who reported them. You can report each post or reply once.
  2. At 5 reports, it’s hidden automaticallyWhen a post or reply reaches 5 reports from different established neighbors (accounts at least a week old with a confirmed email), it’s hidden from everyone except its author until a moderator reviews it. The author sees a notice that it’s under review. Every report is reviewed, even below that number.
  3. A moderator makes the callOur moderators review every report. Content that follows these guidelines is restored; content that doesn’t is removed, and the author is notified by email.

To keep things friendly and spam-free, new posts are limited to 5 an hour and replies to 20 an hour per person. You need a confirmed email address to post, reply or report.

Think we got it wrong?

Email support@newyorknews.app with a link to the post and why you think it should be restored. A different moderator will take a look, usually within two business days.
